Hi Craig,

I just got off the phone with Crystal about the licencing. They are trying to convince us to go to 10 from 8.5. According to them, the following pricing is in effect for 10:

1. Runtime Only API's with no RCAPI available to your clients, still free if bundled into your fat-client product.

2. If the user wants to create their own reports from existing data outside of the fat client application, they can purchase the Professional version for $499 U.S.

3. If as a developer you want to provide the RCAPI so the user can modify the reports from within your application then you as a developer and the customer must each purchase the advanced version for $1,099 U.S.

Option number 3 may be great for large companies, but for smaller organizations that want to purchase our software, it is prohibitive and will result in pricing model changes on our part.

Neil.

>>Crystal Reports also offers a powerful set of report creation APIs to let end users create reports from within your thick-client application. To use these APIs when building your application, you must purchase a copy of Crystal Reports Advanced to access these API's. Then, when you are ready to deploy or redistribute your application, each company deploying this thick-client application is required to purchase a copy of Crystal Reports Advanced Developer. For volume licensing, contact our OEM Department: OEMinfo@businessobjects.com.

>>This tells me that there isn't an option to purchase a Runtime Creation API (RCAPI) license for version 10 like there was in version 9. This also tells me that the cost for a developer to be able to access the RCAPI methods in Crystal Reports 10 is around $1610 for an upgrade to the Advanced Developer version.
