On a situational level I think it is important to know that one's chosen tool is not so "off the pace" in a given area that customers are disadvantaged by choice of that tool. Tests sometimes yield surprising results that contradict the party line. Sometimes tests also show that within a given tool, one technique yields a huge advantage compared to accepted ways. As long as people keep the tests reasonably relevant rather than relying on trick-shots, and as long as the audience is sufficiently competent/well advised to see a test for what it is and not try to extrapolate as an irresistable proof of superiority, testers do us a service.
Oh, and unless somebody has a crack at it, all we are left with is ad-hominam slogans and market-speak. So lets not throw out the baby with the bath water!

"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
