But, look, this is where theory (my assertion above) fits with the practice: the politicians work for the people, i.e. they are employees of the people, literally. And the people are taking good care of their employees, by having created the state (in both applicable meanings: as in "status" and as in "civitas") which they will finance and thereby enforce this care. Perfect world, isn't it?
