I had a VFP app where we used PRTINFO(1,tcPrinter) = -1 to test if the printer was responding. This function returns the paper orientation setting. It seemed to actually work and return an error if the printer is offline. We only dealt with one printer, so we never tested it beyond that. Maybe it will work for you.
