One problem is that what is often labelled a "democracy" is very far from the democratic principle, namely, that the people decide.
Some features that I believe should be eliminated from
any voting system are:
Political parties. The are established for promoting the welfare of a particular group, not the welfare of the majority.
Candidates. Anybody should be eligible, not just people who promote themselves (the very act of promoting ones self already seems suspicious to me).
Propaganda for or against specific people or groups. Same reason as above.
For people accustomed to political parties, candidates, nominations and propaganda, this may seem not feasible. I don't know how well it would work in a national election, but for the last few decades, the Bahá'í community, in its elections, has come along quite well without all these features.
