{try giving both machines ip addresses and ping them from each other to see if they at least see each other.}

I ran PING and got satisfactory results even when the machines are using automatic IP addressing.

The problem appears to be that the laptop doesn't have permission to access the desktop. I don't know which machine maintains the permissions list that's causing this problem.
