It is only a waste of time if the certification is not applicable to a given programmer's situation. If a client wants their Visual FoxPro 6 application maintained, not replaced, passing the exam and having the resultant cert would, potentially, be more beneficial than the .NET certs.

Depends on the client. Some don't care if a consultant is certified on anything (including .NET) so long as the work is performed satisfactorily as your second sentence hints at.

Fortunately, the certifications are not mutually exclusive so people can pursue both mainstream (.NET) certs and specialized/older (VFP 6) certs should the desire and drive exist.
