It might not be a good idea to do this at the database level. If you do that, then the unencrypted information is passed back and forth across the network, and can easily be read by anyone who has an interest in it and access to some fairly basic tools.

I am not a security expert, but in general it is a bad idea to allow sensitive information to travel unencrypted.
