Ah, I've never used .NET on the client side of a web service - does it automatically update the variable which was passed in as a 'byRef' parameter with the returned value? If so then I can see you've got a reasonable emulation of passing by reference. Otherwise, as you say it may be 'as good as' any other method but I don't see that it's any better - just more work getting it out of the SOAP message.
