I used to have the system default settings, “Save all changes” as the Build and Run option. All changes including a failed DLL were saved without a prompt.
Now I changed it to “Save changes to open documents only”. This option won’t save a project if the build fails. I hope it will help to prevent errors in the dependent projects and I will be able to do something before it’s too late.

That is, to be sure you don't save your form, after you've had this problem with the controls disappearing. Once you've done that, they *will* disappear for good.
