Sounds to me like your SQL install is corrupted in some way. You are saying that SQL Server's query analyzer is hanging without even using any other software? But that it also hangs when you use other client's.

What about queries on other databases like Pubs or Northwind, do they also hang the query analyzer? If not, then it could be something corrupted in the database you are working with.

It's strange that one SQL Server tool is working and the other is not. To me, that points to something messed up in SQL ODBC. One other thing maybe to try and install a new SQL ODBC driver. I'm not certain but maybe SQl's query analyzer is using ODBC while the Enterprise Manager has more direct control.

Can you get a successful backup out of the system?

When i run the same query in the query analyzer on the server machine it hangs. This also happens If i run this query from a VFp Client or .net. it just hangs. can someone help me.
