Is this question for buying (or building) a new computer for yourself ? If so, go with AMD.
If you want references I already reviewed tons of them once again in the last month. Besides that where I work there are over 80 boxes with almost any CPU,Board etc you can think of. In the same price range AMD simply outperforms Intel (not talking about well known benchmarks, real world applications).
Selecting a CPU model is the hardest part (and many things are connected to it in chain, like board,RAM). If I had money I'd buy an AMD 64 FX, if I were very rich I'd buy Opteron 848 :) Instead of Duron think of Athlon series. Check for core and prefer Barton (640K cache). Too much details to fit here :( Tell me the price range you think of and I can suggest maybe :)
