I am in a 6 months project of converting an AS400 system over to VFP. Spent two months of that time doing data conversion. I used tab delimited files and imported them into VFP using "delimited with tabs" after I create the VFP table from their file specs. What you will find that unless there is a lot of error checking etc the data needs to be masssaged thorougly. The date fields in the system I converted used 1031231 for 12/31/2003 so all the dates needed to be converted. They also had julian dates. The moving of the data from AS400 to VFP was relatively simple if you have good file specification. The major problem I encountered was the fact that the file spec said only three codes values were to be used in a field like P,O,X. I would find that 8-10 codes had been used. Finding out what the other values meant was a pain, particularly when you are dealing in thousands of records. They never did any error trapping and in some cases a zero could be entered into a field instead of an O when the only acceptable value was P,O,X. Some of the records had transaction dates long before the company started and some transaction were for 2007. Little wonder why my client decided to migrate to a new system.
With good data, good file specification it shouldn't be much of a problem.
