Part of it is: back to basics.
No more "DLL Hell", Registry crud, ActiveX headaches.
The dot Net class framework is "huge"; everything is an "object" ... which translates into easier access to graphics, printing, file access. If you plan to develop for Windows and the Web, it's easier to move between the two ... basically a single code base.
But none of this is particularly new; Borland (ie. Delphi) has been the leader in this area for years. MS (IMO) "borrowed" a lot from Delphi's object and event models.
