My understanding is that the OS uses the first available space in the directory when creating a new entry. This includes the entries marked as deleted. I would expect the DOS order to be the physical order (no sort).

>What is the DOS order, the short file names or long file names. I am a bit confused as sorting on SFNs (esp. with files having similar name thus SFNs will have ~1 ~2 ~3, etc.) but the LFNs maybe quite different 6 chars down.
