VFP is like any other program that creates files on disk, if the app crashes you are subject to data loss.

Since the CDX is derived entirely from the data found in the DBF, the risk is negligible because it only takes an INDEX command(s) to recreate it.

Yes, a very simple solution: close the table and reopen it. This allows the O/S to update the directory entry to some non-zero filesize value.
