Very strange. I also have the grid with indexes for each column and I can sort it in any order. But I never expirience such problems.
Does the grid scrolls back to show selected record? Ensure you do not call Refresh() or SetFocus() methods on scrolling (from Scrolled, MouseDown, MouseUp events, etc).
