The process is more or less like this: Look in the FTP site if there's an .EXE file with a newer version than the one in my local hard disk. If it's new I download the newer file and then replace the current one with the new one. How can I know the version of the .EXE file on the FTP site without downloading it?

FTP only stores directory information so you will need to create a another file that stores your file specific version information as suggested by Anton.
