In fact I am pretty sure that the reader on my car is made in Germany (the company who makes them at least - they are probably made in china), so surely the technology is available in germany and the rest of europe?

Here in Toronto, the Toll Highway (407) uses cameras and transponders. You can buy a transponder, or not, but if you don't then you get hit an invoice that includes an account setup fee that applies each time you use the highway. Then there are admin and other fees. The way people try to hide their rear licence plates can get pretty amusing.

As I understand it, out of provincers don't have to pay the toll.
