What I do in our app us run an overnight , or once a week app which:

For instance if the file structure is :
Customer, date,Invoice no. Value

It takes this data and puts it into a structure such as:

Account Jan Feb March April etc.

This puts a structure on the data and means it can be reported on very easily.

This is obviously a very simplified example.
