Back in the DOS days, you often had to watch out for printers that default to a proportional-spaced font on bootup. Often this was configured through the printer's control panel (I'm referring to the buttons and LCD screen on the printer itself, not the Windows control panel settings), DIP switches, or by sending the appropriate escape sequences from your program to change the font.
