That fact that the OLE-DB driver is a separate download and install, even for in-house corporate developers (no longer in MDAC package), is also a strike against use of DBCs. An author writing to illustrate a technology will use an example that is most likely to be available to most of the readers.

Exactly right... When I was writing my database book 2 years ago, I had a choice to make. In the end, I chose Access because that is what people had. In fact, you won't find Fox or dbf's mentioned (at least not in any substantive way). I considered Fox. But in the end, it would have been an incorrect decision.
