You need to allow popups for the UniversalThread, you do it by going to Tools -> Options -> Web Features, You will notice that by default it blocks popups, now you can either disable that feature (I wouldn't suggest it) or add the sites you want to allow pop-ups. (I am writing this using FoxFire, so I am pretty sure it works :) )

Unfortunately, this does not explain your time out behaivour (sp), what it happened to me when pop-ups were blocked is that it always returned to the main page.
