I don't know for sure, but I suspect that by selecting the default, it uses the color for "Selected Item" in the user's selected Windows color scheme. On XP, it might also be related to themes. Try changing color schemes on your desktop properties and see if it changes the highlight bar in the grid. Then try specifying the blue color for the highlight bar, recompile the application and change the color scheme. I would suspect that if you select a specific color, it will ignore color schemes and show the specified color.
