FWIW, I use a tool from RedGate that does most of this for me. RedGate SqlCompare compares and copies database structures, and SqlDataCompare can easily sync data.

Manual steps are Ok, but it gets to be a big headache if you do it a lot especially if you need to keep track of the changes you've made.

In my development I usually work with 3 identical databases - development, testing and a live server and so I need to keep all three in sync usually and it's extremely nice to just be able to point at each server and tell them to sync structures.

Highly recommended. Works really well...
