Plus, I've got to say that it is even more an issue to the publisher than the author that the book makes money. The author may be a writer, but the publisher is definately trying to make a profit. Either way, whether Walter wishes to contribute to the profit of the publisher or the ego of the author is entirely his choice.
Just because authors often say they are not in it for the money, that doesn't mean that they tear up the royalty checks when they arrive. IOW, the authors and publishers would all like to make a profit. Most authors admit, however, that the money they receive works out to a low per hour rate when calculated with the amount of time involved.
