Hi Tom,

At this point the dream of every boy from Hoboken would be to be able to afford to stay in Hoboken after they grow up. We bought our condo for $180k back in '93 and by 1996 it was already worth over $300,000. Now it's closer to $400,000.

Have fun!

Alex

>Very good information! I remember the book about Frank Sinatra, where Ava Gardner states, “The dream of every boy from Hoboken is to grow up, make enough money and leave”!

>>Hi Dragan,
>>
>>$70,000 and up would be my answer.
>>
>>I live accross the river from Manhattan (in Hoboken) and go there at least once a week.
>>
>>Whiteplains is expensive because it's a rich neighborhood even though it's not particularly close.
>>
>>Hoboken and jersey city are a very easy commute (so is edgewater and north bergen, which are a ferry-ride away), but are becoming extremely expensive.
>>
>>Here in hoboken a decent apartment would be about $2000/month or around $300,000 to purchase.
>>
>>If you want to live in Manhattan, forget about having a car. too much of a headache.
>>
>>Commute-wise, there are three railroad companies that take you from wherever to NY: Metro-North (they reach from northern NY and Connecticut to grand central), LIRR (they reach from Long Island to Penn Station just below the Madison Square Garden), and NJ Transit (which also "lands" in PENN station).
>>
>>Check their maps and you can have an idea of where you want to live in order to attain an easy commute.
>>
>>If you want NY, there are a few nice areas in Queens and Brooklyn Heights is rather upscale (very similar in look and feel to Hoboken, NJ).
>>
>>One piece of advice: If you can make it so instead of working 9 to 5 you can do 10-6 or 11 - 7 you will have a MUUUUCH nicer and less crowded commute. Beware though, that some trains only run INTO NY in the morning and OUT of NY in the evening. If you need to go from NYC to some parts of NJ at noon, you won't be able to.
>>
>>Also, the closer you get to NYC, the more urban it becomes. No houses with gardens here like I infer you have down in VA, except in the suburbs.
>>
>>If you do come to visit, give me a call.

>>>I need some answers today, if possible. I'm considering an offer to work in New York, and I want to know whether the offered salary is anywhere near enough or not.
>>>
>>>So, how much do programmers (in general, but Foxers specially) make in the Big Apple?
