You're right. Salaries in NY aren't necessarily 540% higher than elsewhere, and people do get by with average salaries.
To us, outsiders, it feels like barely getting by because they put up with living in pigeon-hole-like apartments where the bathrooms are so tiny that you have to sit on the toillet with your knees almost touching each other (my experience when visiting a friend).
They put up with what is crap for quality of life because they "live in NY!"
They're so immersed in it, that most new yorkes simply don't understand that for the money they're paying, they're getting royally ripped off. The concept of having 1000 or even 2000 square feet of space is totally alien to most new yorkers.
