I've been running an app on various Novell 4.12 and 5 sites for about 10 years. I've recently upgraded one site to 6.5.

The app's daily cleanup procedure packs the files amongst other things. On the 6.5 net we now regularly (daily) have at least one minced memo file following the packing session. The affected file varies. The pack does not always produce the problem. Typically a dozen files might need packing and only 1 or 2 will report damaged memo files.

The fix is simple, though tedious and somewhat less than optimal. I just append the file into an empty version and overwrite the originals.

I originally thought the problem was related to another issue, viz a conflict between Microsoft databases and Novell's file locking protocols. This results in the network failing to release locks for shared files so that other users can access them. They get messages like "file access denied" or "file does not exist". The fix for that - in case anyone else is banging their head against that particular brick wall - is to insert "SET LEVEL 2 OPLOCKS ENABLED = OFF" as the first line in your autoexec.ncf.

Having done that, however, the minced memo files continue.

Anyone else suffering this sort of glitch? And, if so, any suggestions as to cause or fix?
