Steve, I'm no expert but from what I read there is only controversy around spammers, lists, and list sellers. The response rate is very low and I think its more hamrful than not. Plus I think its actually wrong and wasteful. Instead of wasting trees, as with junk mail, one wastes bandwidth. Spam mail is the biggest consumer of bandwidth and who pays? You and me Joe end-user.
