Hi, David,
Good post...from the developers I've spoken to, many prefer the model of the UT magazine (or even the on-line offering of FoxTalk). I've received FoxTalk (either on my own or through a company) since 1995 - and once the on-line capability became available, I don't think I've ever needed the hardcopy.
I would think that if all FoxTalk subscribers were polled, most would be fine with electronic versions only. Those who truly preferred the hardcopy could obviously print it out themselves, in whatever format they wished.
Same with the books - given the option of having the Hacker's Guide 'on my laptop' vs carrying around 'the big thick' book, I'll always opt for the latter! or at least until I get bigger biceps. ;)
Good point, hadn't considered the costs to promote - though again, the brand name recognition of something like 'Hentzenwerke' (or for that matter, even the Universal Thread!) certainly might have brought something to the table.
Yes, you're right, there may be many 'reasons we'll never know about'. If the decision was made by some to discontinue the magazine, that's fine, that's their choice and decision. But if this were still profitable and could be made more profitable by re-tooling, why would a highly respected technical pub with a history going back over 10 years just be dropped in this way without soliciting anyone to pick it up?
