I agree. I listen to the BBC relatively often and I never hear us referred to as "US Americans." To the world - as far a I can tell - "Americans" are citizens of the United States. Other countries get referred by the additional qualifiers. Of course, people from those other countries may have a different opinion about it. People have become so sensitive in recent years to such insignificant things.
