I don't disagree with any of this Marc, I work in an environment where we are constantly bidding for contracts. The set-up time for the systems required for the contract are often THE most important factor. When I said that I treat most systems as if they were a long term solution, this doesn't necessarily mean FULL systems analysis, pain-staking system design and setup etc. But I can make my life considerably easier in future by taking a little more care and doing some basic things such as setting up a structure, trying to add flexibility and portability and making it a black-box as possible. In this way, when the client requests an urgent amendment two months later, and it must be done in 48 hrs, it's not a big problem.

But I guess that you've got to be very careful where you draw the line in the balancing act between commercial pressures (and competiveness) and a sound system setup.
