This has been going on for a while. The extensions can also be .pif, .scr, .com, and other ones that will execute. It has been requested from the powers that be that when the subject is shown to you it is trimmed of any spaces (even in between), which will make this easily visible.

Regardless, always remember to teach your friends and family to *NEVER* click on unknown, unexpected attachments, etc, etc.
