Hi Dmitry.
>I am curious to what new features this product has that SFR didn't have.
There are a ton of new and improved features:
1. Setup
- Way easier than before: it's now visual using our Configuration Utility rather than requiring subclassing
- You can create calculated fields and virtual tables visually in the Configuration Utility
- You can private-label Stonefield Query so it displays your logo, your company name, Web site, email address, etc.
2. Data Engine
- Support for any database, including SQL Server, Oracle, Pervasive, MySQL, DB2, etc.
- Queries run significantly faster than SFR
- Support for multiple databases
- Support for queries across databases (eg. TABLE1 from DATABASE1 and TABLE2 from DATABASE2), even if the databases use different database engines (eg. DATABASE1 is VFP but DATABASE2 is SQL Server)
- Support for stored procedures or other types of non-SQL access to the data (one client is querying on multi-GB flat text files, for example)
- Support for self-joined tables and other complex relationships
3. Report Engine
- Reports can be output to PDF (no license for a PDF writer like Adobe is required), HTML, Word, Excel, and other file formats
- Reports can be emailed as PDF attachments
- Reports can be run from other applications: scheduler, a VFP app, a batch file, another application
- Cross-tab reports can be created in less than a minute
- Reports can be customized in the VFP Report Designer
4. Filtering
- Ask-at-runtime prompts for values
- Filters can compare a field to another field or a dynamic expression
- The Filter Condition dialog has a Tables dropdown and Show All Fields checkbox, making it easier to select the field you want to filter on
- The user can optionally display the filter condition in the report header (turned on by default)
There are a lot of others things are well, but hopefully this is enough to entice you ;)
>One thing is missing in SFR is ability to group reports.
I'm not sure what you mean. SFR has always had report groups for grouping reports.
>Hopefully there is more information about the new features (maybe even a demo) on Stonefield web site.
See
http://www.stonefieldquery.com for both. The demo version allows you to create up to 3 reports and preview to the screen, not print or output to file.
>And of course I am concerned that if they drop support for the new product, as they did with SFQ and SFR, and without a source code, we (the developers) can be really in trouble.
We never dropped support for SFQ or SFR; we simply discontinued selling those products in that form (a royalty-free source code version). See
http://www.stonefield.com/sfrsupport.html for details. As Denis mentioned, we continue to provide support for both products today.
