Thanks for replying Tamar. All my reports were forcing new pages and I thought that must be the default, so thanks for your comments which gave me hope! I scrapped my reports and started from fresh, and have got it working. The report writer is highly idiosyncratic but I think I have nailed the problem, I just wish I knew how :-)
