I discovered one thing that was sure to cause this problem, and that is that the program was prompting our MAPI server for the SMTP server. When I corrected this it works fine here w/SMTP. I still haven't verified whether our SMTP server can be used from another ISP, but I thought that I had read that this was allowable. In face, I believe I successfully tested this, but it's been some time now.
At any rate, I ended up allowing the user to set up the SMTP or MAPI options, using MAPI as a default. I found that if no MAPI server is specified, then (at least on my computer) the default MAPI server is used. However, when I tried to leave the SMTP server field empty, no luck.
I'll be distributing this week, so I'll know soon how well this works for clients that have no idea what a MAPI or SMTP server is.
