We've solved the problem but I'll try to answer some questions posed to me by the kind respondees.

1. The subordinate forms were modal.
2. The controls on the subordinate forms were disabled.

The problem was that the subordinate forms were modal, each form had its own view but all views were based on the same table. A REQUERY() was not done to ensure that all the views were pointed to the same record.

What we did was to combine all the views into a single view.
