I agree, but usualy a programmer prefers a particular language as the base to begin to develop, maybe a particular framework too, plus other tools. In my case, I learned to program with FORTRAN IV for IBM360 at 1974, as you can imagine since then, I have had to change the prefered base-langauge several times. Each time, the programmer pays a high cost to learn and develop skills with a language. That's the reason to search time by time another languages. I find C#.NET combined with ASP.NET and ADO.NET a very good choice, but I'm not an expert using those tools. Suppose that mostly of your apps are managing data (high volumes) and you are an expert with VFP and SQL, and a good client of you, ask you for a modification of the system. He wants that the system that you developed with VFP accepts some data automatically from a very special hardware devices attached to some machines in an industrial plant. Of course, there is a way to achive that using VFP, but I can see that VFP could not be the best choice on those situations.

So, for the next 10 years, what language (or combination) could be the best "start-point" to cover, easier than others, all the situations? (data management, special hardware devices, web development, etc.)

I'd like to read your oppinion.
