I think David is talking about simple scanner which are attached to your computer more than handheld themselves.

if I understood your question right, you're looking for an option to capture data inyour floor, with a PDA device or a pocket pc, then update you database with that data, am I right?

you can do this in several ways, you can use you handheld to capture your data and then go toa PC an sync the data in the handheld with your databse. you can use RF device to connect to you database directly and update your database in realtime, this is the aproache we use. you can also build a web aplictaion and run it from your pocket pc that connects to a IIS or any web server in your network.

the devices we're using are symbol pdt8100 or 8146 with pocket pc and wavelink for develop our wireless aplications. these devices are $2000.00 ea

they don't give you documentation about programming an app, that's a separated thing
