I have found an Acer with 1.5 GHz Centrino, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB HD for about $1800. That is the one that I am really considering.

I have an application where the database is a list of industrial components identified and scheduled for periodic inspection. Setting up a database and editing or adding records requires entry of extensive information about location, equipment type, chemical service, and applicable inspection requirements, etc. This data entry currently is either done from field notes or process drawings manually entered into the data entry screens in the application or through hand held data terminals or a Palm device that allows entering data in the field and uploading to the application. The field data collection devices are third party devices that are rather old and clunky and not really designed to capture all the information that I need, requiring edit of the records once they are uploaded. I want to create a portable application on a clipboard size, usable pen based tablet PC with a rich data entry interface that is powerful enough to build in some data entry validation logic and actually designed to capture all of the data that we require in an easy to use format. The Palm Pilot program for data entry works better but the small size and limited capabilities makes data entry a kludgy multi-screen interface that is confusing to the user and it is dog slow.
