From what has been said/posted/etc. developer feedback was primarily the motivation for those changes. A LOT of developers asked for improvements in this area (even after VFP 8), so MS (finally) responded.

I use CR anywhere I can, but I'm still looking forward to the enhancements. I think a lot of developers have a ton of legacy reports that can't easily be moved to Crystal (or, it doesn't make financial sense), but they'd still like to be able to improve what they've got. I'm hoping the enhancements fills that void.
