Yes, I remember the GRIDPAD computers back then. I think at the time, UPS or FedX was using them. We looked at them for similar application but they were big and bulky with horible battery life and we determined that the units would not survive the dirty environment in normal use, much less a drop to concrete that does happen sometimes. We went with industrial hand held computers about the size of a brick with a 8-16 line display and settled for less functionality, higher cost, but with an intrinsic safety listing and more reliable, durable service.

I had to giggle because it reminded me of the GRID laptop and TACCS full-size computers the Army purchased about too many years ago to count that werre basically shrink wrapped, TEMPEST secure, and weighed a ton... It was hard to type on plastic shrink covering... :o)

After I have built the field application, I will be looking for tablets for field use, but if these are too delicate for biomedical use, I suspect they would not be suitable for the heavy industrial use that I have in mind. I will eventually need a several rugged, industrial type tablets and hope that development of new models will progress in that direction.
