If your ask any technical person supporting my customers servers, they will say the same thing you are but there are 2 problems:

1) Sometimes there is no connection to the server when they logon in the morning

2) The servers are really slow, so if I have to do lot of read/write to the data files there is a huge delay. Possibly if I rewrote my code to do all the processing in temporary files on the local machine then write back to the server at the end, it would work better. But that puts me back pretty much to what I am doing with my current solution.
