You can do it with report vars, as Yuri states, probably, but you can also do this with code embedded in the Data Environment if you like.

It doesn't matter that you're not using the DE to open or select your table; you can still put code there.

In fact, you can initialize the variable as a report variable but use the DE to actually pre-fill the report var at the beginning of the report run. Just store the report var's own name to itself to make sure the value does not change throughout the run.
