Thanks all,

First, when I put Wait Windows in to show the ActiveRow and ActiveCol, they were okay. I guess switching to the debugger sets them to zero when you lose focus on the grid. I seem to have resolved the problem of going to the first column of the next row by:
APPEND BLANK
GRID.REFRESH()
then set the active cell to the next row, col 1 then GRID.REFRESH() again. I don't understand, but I have made a note of it for future ref. I will also try the TABLEUPDATE() / SKIP just to see. Thanks again....Tim Ard
