>>But, for the sake of progress, let's agree that it is a "bug" in one's own code. Why does it try to "help" me in such a useless way??? Why doesn't it do as it does with countless other conditions that may arise because of MY logic errors - raise an EXCEPTION????

I could just quit the app at that point, fix it in code, and start testing from the top again - or - I could designate a file in Ope dialog, and continue testing - and fix the open error later.

Terry, it's RUNTIME that's the issue. At the customer's site. With NO HOPE of knowing what file is needed. With the chance to cause severe damage if "Cancel" is clicked in reaction.
I agree that, during development, I'LL know whats up even without the information that would behelpful.

>>Keep in mind, too, that the current situation has extra implications in the non-English speaking world, making the dialog even more evil than for us folks here.

What would you expect a user in the heart of Bulgaria or Transylvania do when he gets a dialog with "Open" as the only word in it besides the buttons, which I assume will also show "OK" and 'CANCEL"? Is my sentence construction that bad that even this couldn't be deduced from my original????
