I had no real experience with characters and I keep ANSI default ie. OFF

Actually the requirement arose from numeric

but do I have to type in these nos. (from the help)
-2147483647 to 2147483647 or there is some shortcut to simulate these numbers something like GOMONTH(DATE(), 1) - 1
