I think MS can't buy Linux, as this is not a commercial enterprise. Novell, for example, bought SuSE Linux, a company that produces a specific distribution, but they didn't bought "Linux" at all.

Anyway, I'm not so sure about MS having the need. I think beyonf the heated flame wars, both OSs has their strengths and opportunities.
