I understand that redesigning your entire reporting system can be quite a job.

Perhaps you can test it in any case, to see whether it works as desired. In that case, you might at least consider this option for new systems.

In text-mode reporting, it also helps - for new development efforts - to put generic functionality into a class, like my download #9991. That way, if you later find that something needs to be changed, hopefully, you have to change it in one single place.
